Topic: VIDEO CONFERENCE: Explaining and Complaining Don’t Work

Explaining and complaining are normal parts of human communication. We notice these methods even in young children. How many times have you heard excuses like this from children: “I didn’t do it;” or “I don’t know;” or “Don’t blame me”?

As we get older our explaining and complaining may become more sophisticated. For example, we may say something like, “That really hurts my feelings;” or “Please don’t yell at me;” or “That’s not what I meant.” As well intended as these messages may be, they don’t work, especially with people on the Spectrum.

It’s pretty simple, really. Explaining and complaining only work if you have a high level of empathy and you are willing to inquire about the other person. These phrases are not enough to carry the conversation without a bit more digging into the thoughts and feelings behind the statements. Because of Empathy Dysfunction (EmD-0), NeuroDiverse people don’t ask. And they don’t offer more. The transaction is completed as far as they are concerned when the statement is made.

Come to this conference prepared to take notes. This is a pretty tricky concept to understand, but once you get it, you won’t be trapped in the black and white world of endless explaining and complaining with your ASD loved one.
