TOPIC: VIDEO CONFERENCE: Autism as Context Blindness
WHEN: Monday, March 1st, at 10 am PST
Once you understand the concept of Context Blindness (see Peter Vermeulen) you will have a huge step un in interacting with your ASD loved one. Context Blindness is why they talk on and on about things that are not at the center of the conversation. It also explains why they get overwhelmed and filled with dread.
Another way to look at Context Blindness is that it is really Context Overload. Autistic people can’t see the forest for the trees so to speak. Every little bit of the context has the same value, so they don’t know what to focus on and what to let go of. They might wait for your cue as to where to take the conversation next. Or they may dominate in order to wipe away their fears that they don’t know what is going on. Or they may fall silent and hopelessly wait for it to make sense.
This is a complex topic and I wanted to start with a small group of members to discuss it. Like I said, once you get this very important concept, you can start to build a way to get past their context overwhelm.
