Topic: TELECONFERENCE: Does a Diagnosis of ASD Help?
Thursday, May 28th at 1:00 pm Pacific Time
I often hear this question from members. Many of you have loved ones that seem to fit the criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder or “Asperger Syndrome,” but you are nervous about suggesting this to him or her.
Sometimes your partner even agrees with you that they meet many of the criteria for the diagnosis, but they refuse to ask for professional evaluation and diagnosis.
There is a third group of members who are terrified to tell anyone of their suspicion, for a variety of reasons. They don’t want to upset the family. Or they worry that a diagnosis would harm their partner at work or in the community.
These are all normal concerns. Personally I am fine with an informal diagnosis for very high functioning autistic people, but for us NTs, a formal diagnosis can give us peace of mind. Plus a diagnosis allows you to finally seek the specialized help that is needed. Wandering around with traditional therapy is certainly not rewarding.
Let’s use this teleconference to discuss how each of you has handled this dilemma and the benefits and liabilities of a diagnosis.
