Topic: VIDEO CONFERENCE: Why do I get so angry with my NeuroDiverse partner?
When: Tuesday, November 1st at 4 PM Pacific Time
Not such an easy question is it, particularly since we must admit to the anger in the first place? However, as we all know, taking a good look at the dark side of our personalities is the first step toward healing and growth.
I am not saying that we, NeuroTypicals, anger easily, even though many of our partners on the Spectrum think so. In fact, it is the exact opposite. We actually make valiant attempts to get past the misunderstandings, using our empathy to reframe, explain, and regroup. We step back as our NeuroDiverse partner grows annoyed, or hurt, or retreats, or escalates. Tentatively we try again — until it feels impossible — and then the anger surfaces — our anger.
Please know that you are not alone in feeling this anger. It is a common feeling among those of us in a relationship with an adult on the Autism Spectrum. It is not just a defense mechanism; it is a survival mechanism. A wise person once said,
“Sometimes, when you feel crazy, it may not be you. It may be the situation you find yourself in.”
Come prepared to this conference to acknowledge your anger. Forgive yourself for being human. And learn some new ways to reduce your anger with your NeuroDiverse partner — maybe even rise above it.
