Part of our healing from the anguish of these very tough relationships, is to accept the reality of the problem. There may be nothing wrong with you, your communication skills, or your relationship skills. It really might be that you are dealing with an ASD partner who is creating the friction.

Yes of course, you have things to work on too. Healthy people recognize that they are always in need of feedback and developmental adaptions. However, improvement in ASD/NT relationships does not involve the usual NT introspection and give-and-take dialog that works so well everywhere else. Odd as it may sound, it helps to step back and recognize that it is not you. It may be them.

What I am asking of you here is to detach from your expectations. Instead, delve deeply into the world of your “Aspie” so that you can get past how their thinking stops you. We need to remain resourceful for our ASD loved ones, understand where they are coming from — and then design an intervention. We NTs have the tools to do this, when our ASD loved ones do not.
